Mountains May Depart (12A)

Mountains May Depart

The life of Tao, and those close to her, is explored in three different time periods: 1999, 2014, and 2025.

China, 1999. In Fenyang, Shen Tao (Zhao Tao), a beautiful and spirited young woman, has caught the eye of two men: childhood friends Liangzi, a coal miner, and Zhang, the owner of a gas station. She must choose between her two suitors and two vastly divergent paths.

At once an intimate drama and a decades-spanning epic that leaps from the recent past to the present to the speculative near-future, Jia Zhangke's new film is an intensely moving study of how China's economic boom and the culture of materialism it has spawned has affected the bonds of family, tradition, and love.

'Zhao is the film’s racing heart, and gives a performance of extraordinary detail and depth of feeling' Robbie Collin - The Telegraph
