Stage Russia: The Seagull (15*)

Afternoon Arts

Stage Russia throws a dinner party in The Seagull

This encore screening from Satirikon Arkady Raikin Russian State Theatre captures all the frenzy of Yury Butusov's production of the Chekhov classic.

Konstantin Tréplev is about to debut his radical new play starring ingenue Nina. His mother, the fading actress Irina Arkadina, has arrived with her lover, Boris Trigorin, a well-known writer, to see its premiere. But romantic and artistic jealousy gets in the way.

Creativity and destruction lie in an uneasy balance in these four artists' lives. A tragicomic portrait of the creative personality, Yury Butusov's production abounds in an incredible freedom and openness, delving deep into the throes of artistic creation and the anguish of the artist struggling to find his voice.
