My Grandmother (15*)

Silent Film & Live Music

A woman hugs her husband with a deranged look in her eyes

In this madcap Soviet-era satire a lazy bureaucrat is fired from his job and must find a ‘grandmother’ – slang for ‘benefactor’ – to help him back into work.

This one-of-a-kind oddity has all kinds of avant-garde experimentation on display: stop-motion and hand-drawn animation bits of puppetry, expressionist décor, distorting lenses, looming angles, freeze-frames.

And while the Harold Lloyd-esque pen-pusher may be the film’s protagonist, it is his assertive, wild-haired, wildly consumerist wife who steals the show.

Watch the film here in digital restoration, with a live a live accompaniment by Stephen Horne and Meg Morley.

Please note: contains scenes of suicide.
