Mohopolo/Ancestral Memory Weekend
Abel Selaocoe & Friends
South African artist Abel Selaocoe goes back to his roots for this specially-curated weekend, inviting guests from his homeland to gather in an act of remembrance of their shared history.
Selaocoe will ‘travel the paths our ancestors the Bantu people took, forming our ideals and understanding of community, our evolution, our stand against violence and conflict’. Abel Selaocoe is joined by Zulu artist Mbuso Khosa, pianist Nduduzo Makhathini and percussionist Gontse Makhene in an opening event in which they will share stories and songs from their tribal traditions. Saturday night sees the return of BCUC and Zulu artist Toyah Delazy in a transcendent collaboration of heavy electronic and traditional beats, followed by an amapiano club stage with DJ SNO. The weekend culminates in the world premiere of a new dance work by acclaimed choreographer Mthuthuzeli November, channelling the deep spirituality of South Africa, accompanied by Selaocoe’s Bantu Ensemble.
