Young Mothers (12A)

Two young mothers holding their babies.

This social-realism drama shines a light on the lives of adolescent mothers in Belgium, from director-duo the Dardenne brothers.

Winner of Best Screenplay award at Cannes earlier this year, this almost-documentary drama follows five teenage mothers settling into their new lives.

Living together in a maternal support home in Belgium, the film draws on time spent in state-run facilities; where the directors capture the experience of the young women; the social workers who guide them; and the system that tries to sustain them. From drug addiction, to precarious living situations, these women finds support and solidarity in their newfound community.

For fans of Ken Loach and Andrea Arnold, the Dardenne brothers should be next on your watchlist.
