Red Persimmons + Intro (U*)

Land Cinema

women picking red persimmons

Carefully chronicling the growing, drying, peeling and packaging of persimmons, this unusual documentary is an ode to rural Japan.

Shot during a period of rapid modernisation in the 1980s, the film immerses viewers in the slower, seasonal world of agrarian tradition. Directed by Ogawa Productions, a collective founded by documentarian Ogawa Shinsuke in 1968, the film was completed posthumously by Peng Xiaolian.

Ogawa Pro is famous for making black and white protest films on farmland razed for an airport near Tokyo. Lesser known are rapturous colour films like Red Persimmons, made patiently over two decades as the collective lived, farmed and filmed together in rural Yamagata.

Introduced by season curator Becca Voelcker.
