Voiced: The Festival For Endangered Languages

Abstract script over blue ink stained paper

How do we say the things most important to us? Leading poets, artists, and writers are exploring this question through endangered texts, newly commissioned poems and unique visual scripts.

Come and join a host of poets, artists and creators in celebrating our linguistic freedom. There are over 7000 languages worldwide that can be written in over 300 different alphabets and scripts, yet that number is shrinking dramatically. Drop in on level G at the Hub space to explore why that is and discover a diverse cast of creatives that are bringing endangered languages and stories to life.

At the heart of Voiced is a brand new set of commissions exploring what home means and how our language shapes the people and places we love. The Creative Voice Hub is visually showcasing five new poems including the work of Canadian Inuk writer Norma Dunning; Amajagh writer and painter, Hawad who writes in the Tamajaght language; Belarusian poet Hanna Komar; London-based Filipino poet Troy Cabida and the National Poet of Wales, Hanan Issa. A poem with links to five continents is written in its endangered script, alongside its corresponding translation.

A decade ago a report stated that UK dialects will become obsolete in 50 years, but all around us we hear local languages dynamically evolving. No more so than in poetry, where dialects provide material for some of the most exciting contemporary poets to create their work. See this work displayed and explored visually in the Creative Voice Hub.
