Dystopia is Not the Future

Green writing spells out 2073 over a pile of rubble

Blending visionary science fiction and nonfiction, this cinematic warning from a dystopian future urges us to tackle the biggest challenges endangering our present day.

It’s 2073, and the worst fears of modern life have been realised.  Surveillance drones fill the burnt orange skies and militarised police roam the wrecked streets, while humans hide away underground, struggling to remember a free and hopeful existence.

Samantha Morton plays a survivor besieged by nightmare visions of the past – a past that happens to be our present, visualised through contemporary footage interconnecting today’s rise of authoritarianism, unchecked big tech, inequality, and our global climate crisis.

After the film, director Asif Kapadia (Senna, Amy) and award-winning investigative journalist Carole Cadwalladr join us on stage to discuss this vision of a dystopic future and offer ideas on how we could create a better tomorrow.
