Digital Programme: Hamlet

A person in a yellow shirt and blue jeans sitting on a green sofa chair with one of their hands up. They are against a background of screens with a face on it

Welcome

Welcome to the Barbican Theatre and the captivating show created by director Chela De Ferrari and her ground-breaking company, Teatro La Plaza. This is Hamlet as we have never seen it before, in a fresh perspective from the first Peruvian company to perform on our stage. In this Hamlet, it is a collective of young actors in the spotlight. Inspired by how Shakespeare’s timeless play about the search for self and soul resonated in their own lives, they share their dreams and frustrations with us. Through compelling monologues, protest songs, video design, soaring choreography and even unexpected humour, they uncover rarely explored pathways through the classic text, inviting us to experience a richer understanding.

We hope you enjoy this unforgettable production as it visits London for the first time on its journey around the world, in a remarkable and resounding celebration of life.

Thank you for joining us.

Toni Racklin, Barbican Head of Theatre & Dance

Presenting our version of Hamlet at the Barbican – with a cast of actors with Down syndrome – feels especially urgent. It matters that it’s seen on a stage of such cultural relevance, particularly in a time marked by increasing backlash against diversity, equity and inclusion. In many ways, bringing this Hamlet to the Barbican is an act of resistance.

Personally, I’ve had the immense privilege of seeing extraordinary works there over the past twenty years – productions by some of the greatest artists of our time. What strikes me most is that, even when the scale and production are grand, these works never lose the spirit of experimentation. They are unconventional and courageous. Every time I’ve visited the Barbican, I’ve left feeling inspired. To now be presenting our Hamlet on this same stage is an honour. It feels joyful to be part of a space that means so much to me – as an artist and as an audience member.

About Teatro La Plaza

We are a theatre-making space in Lima, Peru, that investigates and interprets reality to construct a critical perspective that engages with its community.

The name of our organisation, The Plaza, was inspired by the desire to become a space that democratically brings its inhabitants together and, like a mirror, reflects all human events.

We opened our doors in 2003 with the aim of connecting with our community by offering a carefully curated selection of works capable of challenging, provoking and surprising. Through new plays, as well as classics with a contemporary perspective, our programme seeks to formulate key questions that allow us to better understand our reality, the turbulent times we live in and the complex nature of humankind.

With the ambition to collaborate in the development of local playwrights, in 2013 La Plaza created Sala de Parto, a programme that stimulates new Peruvian plays and authors.

Looking ahead, our programming will continue to strive to build a theatre that is open to the issues that concern us and those that move us. We make theatre to speak out and remember, but also to dream of a country where no one feels excluded: a country of empathetic citizens.
