La Cocina (15)

Alonso Ruizpalacios' latest drama where emotions boil and steam in the busy kitchen of a NYC restaurant.

La Cocina takes place in a restaurant called The Grill, somewhere in the centre of Manhattan. The film follows the restaurant's staff: Estela (Anna Diaz), a new hire who does not speak a word of English, shadows Pedro (Raúl Briones), an experienced chef and illegal immigrant. American waitress Julia (Rooney Mara) is pregnant with Pedro's baby.

When money goes missing from one of the cash registers, the entire staff, composed mostly of immigrants, comes under suspicion.

La Cocina is adapted from Arnold Wesker’s 1957 play, shot stylized in black and white, reflecting the joyless exploitation the restaurant staff endure. Paired with a pulsating score from Tomás Barreiro, a frequent collaborator of Ruizpalacios.

La Cocina is more relevant than ever given the current political climate of the United States.
