Soufiane Ababri: Performance

Developed site-specifically as part of his commission in The Curve, this performance reflected on the politics of queer nightlife, and explored themes of marginalisation, resistance and community.

In collaboration with Guillaume le Pape, this site-specific performance followed a group of people who'd been denied entry to a nightclub. Exploring the politics of queer nightlife, it examined the duality of clubs as both safe spaces and places where certain privileges and oppressions are perpetuated.

We moved with the group through the space of The Curve, as Ababri emphasised the tension between inclusion and exclusion, safety and vulnerability within these spaces, reflecting on the complex social hierarchies and power structures at play in queer nightlife.

Delving into the nuanced realities of LGBTQIA+ clubs and raves, Ababri underscored how the promise of acceptance and freedom often coexists with societal inequalities. A call to action prompting us to collectively rethink how we create and navigate spaces of belonging and resistance.
