London Symphony Orchestra/Sir Antonio Pappano

Tippett & Beethoven

A portrait photo of Sir Antonio Pappano, against a grey background, looking away from the camera into the distance.

Tippet's moving pacifist oratorio meets Beethoven’s immense Choral Symphony.

A Child of our Time was Tippett’s response to Kristallnacht, a Nazi pogrom against German Jews. In a unique, utterly touching musical language his oratorio explores the darkness of the world and of individuals. A powerful collective spirit is forged in the famous spirituals.

Beethoven’s huge, influential Symphony No 9 tackles the vastness of the universe. Its journey is hesitant, stormy and soulful until the final movement welcomes in the human voice – and a hope for the future.

The London Symphony Chorus joins the Orchestra in these heartfelt expressions of humanity.

This performance will end at approximately 9.50pm, including a 20-minute interval (timings subject to change).

Celebrating 200 years of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony and its commission by the Royal Philharmonic Society.
