Kronos Quartet

with Sam Green and Trio Da Kali

Kronos Quartet performing with Trio Da Kali on a stage with a red curtain backdrop

A double dose of Kronos Quartet; looking to their past in the live cinema performance piece A Thousand Thoughts and to the present in their latest collaboration with the Malian ensemble Trio Da Kali.

In A Thousand Thoughts, Oscar-nominated filmmaker Sam Green questions how music can change the world – combining archival footage and filmed interviews with Philip Glass, Terry Riley and more, with live narration and music from the quartet. Looking back at Kronos Quartet’s enduring legacy, it’s both an important record of late 20th and early 21st century music and a meditation on music itself – the act of listening, the experience of feeling, and the power that music has to drive change.

In the second half of the show, the quartet will be joined by Mali’s young Griot supergroup Trio Da Kali, following their exquisite collaboration on album Ladilikan in 2017. It’s both a reminder of Kronos Quartet’s spirit of continuous exploration and also an electrifying upbeat to A Thousand Thoughts; another reason to be cheerful that Kronos Quartet have been making music for 40 years.

Trio Da Kali was brought together by Lucy Duran on behalf of the Aga Khan Music Initiative – a programme of the Aga Khan Trust for Culture

‘It’s a special opportunity to revisit our extensive body of work in a legacy context, while creating the kind of new and innovative audience experience that has always been at the core of our mission.‘

50 for the Future: The Kronos Learning Repertoire was launched in 2015 and is commissioning 50 new string quartet works - by 25 women and 25 men - which are devoted to contemporary music approaches and designed for the training of students and emerging professionals.

This evening string quartets from the Centre for Young Musicians (a division of the Guildhall School) will be performing the following works on the Barbican Freestage:

Ken Benshoof Sweeter than Wine
Rhainnon Giddens At the Purchaser’s option
Yotam Haber From the Book

Centre for Young Musicians is a vibrant Saturday Music School for 5 – 18 year olds, developing young people’s musical and creative skills.  The string quartets performing tonight have been coached by Kronos Quartet, exploring these new works and developing their technical skills.
