Join us to explore the resonances between the work of radical artist Carolee Schneemann and contemporary practitioners.

Taking place at Rich Mix, this event explores sensory bodily practices and the idea of working with, up to, and including our own limits.

The evening will include screenings of a selection of Schneemann’s performance films, a live performance of Voicings by artist Florence Peake, as well as a screening of Peake’s work RITE performed at Palais de Tokyo. The evening provides a fresh context for interpreting both Peake and Schneemann’s work, expanding on the synergies between these two artists.

A sound performance by artist Hannah Catherine Jones will bring the evening to a close, exploring the limits of language and voice, from the operatic to the guttural. Performed alongside screenings of Schneemann’s films, Jones’ sound will provide a new sonic texture to Schneemann’s work, and shed new light on both artists’ practices

Florence Peake

Florence Peake is a London-based artist who has been making work since 1995. She makes solo and group performance works intertwined with an extensive visual art practice. Presenting work internationally and across the UK in galleries, theatres and the public realm. Peake’s practice uses movement, text, film, drawing, painting and sculpture that respond and intercept each other.  Her work explores notions of materiality and physicality; the body as site and vehicle of protest, the erotic and sensual as tools for queering materiality. By encouraging chaotic relationships between the body and material, she creates radical and outlandish performances, creating temporary alliances and micro-communities within the audience.

Peake is part of the Hayward Gallery’s touring British Art Show 9 (2021). Peake’s work has been presented at National Gallery 2021,  Arsenic theatre and Sudpol theatre in Switzerland (2020),Venice Biennale 2019; CRAC Occitanie, Sète, France (2018), London Contemporary Music Festival, UK (2018), Bosse & Baum, London, UK (2019); De La Warr Pavilion, Bexhill, UK (2018); Palais De Tokyo, Paris, France (2018); Hayward Gallery, London UK (2018), Wysing Arts Centre, Cambridge, UK (2017), Studio Leigh, London UK (2017); Sara Zanin Gallery, Rome, Italy (2017); Serpentine, London UK (2016); Whitechapel Gallery, London, UK (2016); ICA, London (2016); Modern Art Oxford (2016); BALTIC, Newcastle UK (2013), DRAF (2013), Yorkshire Sculpture Park (2012).

Dr Hannah Catherine Jones

Dr. Hannah Catherine Jones (aka Foxy Moron) is a London-based artist, scholar, multi-instrumentalist, broadcaster and DJ (BBC Radio/TV, NTS - The Opera Show), composer, conductor and founder of Peckham Chamber Orchestra – a community project established in 2013 

Jones completed her AHRC DPhil scholarship at Oxford University for which the ongoing body of work The Oweds was presented as a series of live and recorded, audio-visual episode-compositions, using disruptive sound as a methodology of institutional decolonisation (which she broadcast episodically via her NTS show) and was awarded with no corrections. Dr. Jones has lectured/performed/exhibited widely, internationally, and recently showed Owed to Diaspora(s) at NIRIN - 22nd Biennial of Sydney. Jones is a recipient of the BBC Radiophonic Oram Award for innovation in music (2018) and has been nominated for the Paul Hamlyn Award (Composition). 

HCJ recently founded the Chiron Choir - a vocal ensemble for femmes, woman, queer, diasporic, LGBTQI+ individuals - established in 2022 as part of her solo exhibition OWED TO CHIRON (The Wounded Healer) at Mimosa House, Holborn, open until December 21st 2022.  @foxymoron87 theoweds.com
