Carolee Schneemann: Body Politics

Courtauld Symposium

A film strip from Fuses

This day-long symposium, co-organised with the Courtauld’s Gender and Sexuality Research Group, considers Carolee Schneemann’s work and legacy.

This symposium has been organised alongside our retrospective exhibition. It will examine Schneemann’s interdisciplinary approach, engagement with and assessment of urgent political questions, her relationship to feminism, and her connections with wider artistic communities. Throughout the day speakers will consider the ways in which Schneemann challenged, dismantled, and expanded the subjects and media she worked with. Contributors will address her long career and innovative experiments with form alongside her explorations of sexual expression, personal politics, and body as a medium, as well as the historical and artistic contexts in which she was working. The symposium ultimately aims to offer new perspectives on Schneemann’s oeuvre.

Keynote speaker: Dr Lucy Bradnock (The Courtauld).

Please note that this event will take place at The Courtauld Institute of Art and not at Barbican.

The symposium will run from 9.45am - 6pm.

Organised by Dr Rachel Warriner (The Courtauld) and Lotte Johnson (Barbican Art Gallery), with support from the Centre for American Art.
