Prayers for the Stolen (15)

Prayers for the Stolen

The feature debut from Mexican-El Salvadoran filmmaker Tatiana Huezo tells a powerful story of friendship, family and survival.

Loosely adapted from Jennifer Clement’s 2014 novel of the same name, it follows the lives of three girls in the rural village of Guerrero, which is dominated by the violent presence of the local drug trade and the threat of human trafficking. Told from a unique child’s eye perspective, Huezo’s film addresses the increasing issues surrounding Mexico’s “disappeared” individuals.

An important and unforgettable indictment of the hidden evils of an unjust war, this is a blistering depiction of the women living in the crosshairs. After winning a Special Mention in the Un Certain Regard section of the 2021 Cannes Film Festival, it went on to be Mexico’s official submission for Best International Feature Film at the 94th Academy Awards.
