School of Hope (L’école de l’espoir) (15)

Chronic Youth 2022

An older man reads to a young boy covered in red blankets

L'École de l'espoir centres on an isolated clay building, east of the Atlas Mountains, known as the ‘School of Hope’, providing a welcome, but challenging lifeline to its young nomadic students.

Their dedicated teacher Mouloud is determined to provide them with an education and the future prospects that come with one, but this is not without its obstacles - within the school there is no running water or electricity, and beyond the building is the harsh expanse of the desert, intensified by climate change, across which his students must trek everyday.

At home, they face gendered and financial pressures, and the choice between the deceptive temptation of urban migration, or the abandonment of an ancestral lifestyle. Despite its remote, unique location, L’école de l’espoir navigates the challenges of amodernising world, caught between social and environmental concerns.
