Road by Jim Cartwright

Guildhall School of Music & Drama

Three young boys looking at the camera

Set in 1980s Britain, Road explores the lives of the inhabitants of an unnamed street in a small Lancashire town.

Unemployment is high, an unpopular leader is re-elected and the country is recovering from a recession. But tonight, there’s a party to go to.

Poignant, funny and poetic, Road is a portrayal of ordinary people’s lives set against the backdrop of a nation divided.

Jim Cartwright’s Road is ‘uncomfortable and magical...funny and bitter...a northern Under Milk Wood’ (Sunday Times). Paul Foster directs this production.

Presented by Guildhall School of Music & Drama. This amateur production of “Road” is presented by arrangement with Concord Theatricals Ltd. on behalf of Samuel French Ltd.

A recording of this production will be available to watch online for free after the performances. Watch online from 2 March.

‘Cartwright’s vivid language, with its ugly-beautiful poetry, its rage and compassion, still grabs you by the throat and squeezes, hard.‘
