Passing (12A)

Black and white still of Ruth Negga as Clare and Tessa Thompson as Irene in Passing.

In her directorial debut, Rebecca Hall adapts Nella Larsen's classic Harlem renaissance novel into a black and white melodrama starring Ruth Negga and Tessa Thompson.

It's 1920s Harlem and Irene Redfield (Thompson) is settled in her middle class lifestyle, she is married to a successful doctor (Andre Holland) and a doting mother to two boys. But this idyllic setting is threatened by the re-appearance of Clare Kendry (Negga), a childhood friend who has chosen to lead her life passing as a White woman.

Larsen's masterful, tongue-in-cheek storytelling is elegantly transferred to screen in Hall's confident debut, that like the many melodramas of it time, tackles the intricacies of race, class and sexuality.
