Architecture on Film

Architect Ryue Nishizawa inside his vintage Alfa Romeo car in a black and white still image

Filmmakers Ila Bêka & Louise Lemoine (Koolhaas Houselife, Barbicania) embark on an intimate guided tour of Tokyo, as passengers of architect Ryue Nishizawa and his temperamental vintage Alfa Romeo.

An urban road movie, extensive interview and diary of a day, this film offers a portrait of both Japan’s capital and one of its most celebrated architects. Ten years in the waiting, Tokyo Ride records a date between Bêka & Lemoine and Nishizawa, resulting in an improvised collaboration between the filmmakers, their protagonist, the city, the weather and a car.

Lifelong Tokyo resident and Pritzker Architecture Prize-winner Nishizawa leads a day through the ever-changing city – including tea at the house he designed for his SANNA partner, Kazuyo Sejima – during an April day of showers, driving and conversation, in which sites and ideas are navigated and narrated, in front of the lens of two filmmakers, dedicated to discovering and representing architecture differently.

After, the filmmakers are in conversation with architect Lucy Styles
