On the Rocks (12A)

Sofia Coppola (Lost in Translation, The Beguiled) writes and directs this droll New York City-set comedy, starring Rashida Jones and Bill Murray.

Laura (Jones) is in a bit of a rut: stuck with writer’s block, she’s also raising two children and worried that her husband Dean (Marlon Wayons) is having an affair.

Spilling her troubles over cocktails and a nice meal, her father Felix (Murray) – himself clearly no stranger to infidelities – comes up with a plan: they can follow Dean and discover if he’s cheating. As father and daughter spend time together, Laura becomes more aware of how flawed Felix is, even if his love is never in doubt.

Wonderfully charming and a little glamorous, Murray and Jones turn fairly classic roles into something warm-hearted, wry and absorbing.

‘lovely, elegant, funny little film[...] Each scene is compact and feels lived in, without any urgent narrative drive. That elegant surface makes it seem like a trifle, but there are layers beneath. ‘
