Explore the rarely screened cinema of pioneering French director Jacqueline Audry.

Jacqueline Audry was one of the most daring French filmmakers in the 40s and 50s, creating a series of female-focused melodramas that commented on women’s role in society, which put female, and often queer, sexuality at the centre of the story. She was by far the most prolific female director working in France at the time, and created terrific roles for many French stars.

French New Wave filmmakers in the mid-late 50s dismissed swathes of French cinema from the previous couple of decades, with Francois Truffaut deriding ‘la tradition de qualité’, referring to what he saw as stuffy and anonymous features, often period dramas and literary adaptations. Yet through her films Audry subverted the period drama genre to subtly critique patriarchal attitudes and emphasising the resilience of her female characters, who were usually her protagonists.
