Jess Gillam (saxophone)

ECHO Rising Stars

Jess Gillam smiling happily in anticipation of her concert at the lso

Brilliant saxophonist Jess Gillam opens a new ECHO Rising Stars series featuring Europe’s most vibrant young musicians, performing a selection of classics spanning four centuries.

As the first saxophonist to reach the final of BBC Young Musician, as a radio presenter and as the star of the 2018 Last Night of the Proms, Gillam is a musician bursting with charisma – and her programme reflects that.

So music from 18th-century Venice and 20th-century Paris jostles with a brand new commission, a British minimalist classic, and the dazzling RANT! – which John Harle tailored specially to Gillam’s personality and playing. It’s a gloriously colourful selection, but whatever Gillam chooses to play, from the moment she picks up her sax it’s impossible to imagine it being played on any other instrument.

The performance will finish at approximately 2pm.

Nominated by Sage Gateshead.
