Being Impossible (15*) + ScreenTalk

Part of Fringe! Queer Film & Arts Fest

a couple hug naked

A painful first sexual experience leads Ariel to unearth the secrets of her birth, and the lies behind the binary assignment of her body.

Ariel has been raised as a girl. With few opportunities available, she has followed her mother into the factory where she works as a machinist. After a dubious diagnosis from the family doctor, Ariel discovers that she was in-fact born intersex and was as a baby subjected to a series of “corrective”surgeries to make her female.

This exquisitely shot and  sensitively told story is intercut with real life testimonials from the intersex community. It is a challenging yet delicate inquiry into societal policing of complex bodies and genders.

After the screening, DIVA magazine columnist and intersex activist, Valentino Vecchietti joins us, along with film industry panelists to discuss intersex representation, culture, and inclusion, on the topic of 'The Abject Subject: Fiction, Fact, and Activism'. Fellow panelists are to be confirmed.
