Arcadi Volodos in recital

Arcadi Volodos sat at the piano

Any British appearance by the Russian-born master-pianist Arcadi Volodos is a major event. This programme of Schumann and Liszt traces a journey to the innermost soul of 19th-century romanticism.

He begins with Liszt: the supreme piano virtuoso, refracting intense emotion through the prism of a breathtaking keyboard technique. And then he moves onto Schumann, and his poetic celebration of the joy and sorrows of creativity. It’s hard to think of any living pianist who embodies those twin worlds more fully than Arcadi Volodos.

In fact, Volodos’s last Barbican appearance left critics struggling for words. 'The individual notes float across the room' wrote Bachtrack, 'as if carried on a breath of wind blown by some backstage sprite'. But this is about more than just genius-level piano playing and ravishing sounds. Expect profound, uncompromising insight from an artist who acknowledges no definition of excellence but his own.

End-time to be announced closer to the event.
