Diego Maradona (12A) + ScreenTalk with director Asif Kapadia

Diego Maradona

Oscar and BAFTA-winning director Asif Kapadia joins us in conversation with Shanida Scotland to discuss his new film, about legendary Argentine footballer Diego Maradona.

Charting Maradona's beginnings from the slums of Villa Fiorito in Buenos Aires, to lifting the World Cup for Argentina in 1986, this is a gripping account of a life full of sport, politics, drugs, the mafia, fame, football and – perhaps, above all – excess.

As with his previous features Senna (2011) and Amy (2015), Kapadia draws on contemporary footage and audio from throughout Maradona’s career; we see and hear afresh some of the Argentine's most astonishing moments, including the ‘Hand of God’ goal against England, the triumph of leading underdogs Napoli to the Serie A title, to the problems of addiction, infidelity and friendships with the mafia.

Never cautious, never careful and absolutely never dull, this documentary lays bare one of the most extraordinary sporting figures of our time.
