Dounia and the Princess of Aleppo + amulet making in the café (PG*)

Family Film Club x Marsm

A girl sitting on a train with her parents looks hopefully out the window.

Family Film Club is delighted to be partnering with Marsm Festival to present this wonderful family animation, as part of A Season of Arabic Culture.

Six-year-old Dounia lives with her father and grandparents in Aleppo but when her father is arrested, her family must flee the city.

Forced on a treacherous journey Dounia never loses her determination to find a new home and carries with her a handful of nigella seeds to connect her with the magic of her beloved country.

This bold and beautiful animation blends a child’s eye view of displacement and conflict with humour, fantasy and music, creating a poetic story, giving young audiences an entry point to discuss Dounia’s experience and the need for respect and understanding for all.

Come along before the film from 10am and collect your free amulet making pack, inspired by today’s film. Family groups can make their own in the foyer at our arts and crafts table or take with them and get creative at home!
