London Symphony Orchestra/François-Xavier Roth

Adámek & Beethoven, with Isabelle Faust

Isabelle Faust

Composers being playful: early Beethoven's wit and jokes pair with a cat-and-mouse chase around the orchestra from Ondřej Adámek.

Beethoven’s First and Fourth Symphonies are witty and elegant. Yet there are moments which foretell the bold, stormy symphonies that would follow, such as the opening for the First’s finale, and the assertive horn blasts in the Fourth’s Scherzo. Ondřej Adámek’s invitation to Follow Me results in a teasing, increasingly wild imitation game between soloist and orchestra.

François-Xavier Roth, LSO Principal Guest Conductor, is fascinated by what happens when you hear Beethoven alongside the music of today. ‘Beethoven’s symphonies are amazing examples of radical, modern music in his own time,’ he says, ‘which changed the basis of composing. The brilliant violinist Isabelle Faust joins the Orchestra for Adámek’s playful Concerto.

This performance will end at approximately 8.55pm, including a 20-minute interval (timings subject to change).
