Elvis (12A) (AD)

Oscar Week 2023

Still from Elvis

Austin Butler gives a break-out performance as ‘The King’ Elvis Presley, in Baz Luhrmann’s extravagant biopic.

Taking us right through Elvis’s life, and by extension, modern US history, Luhrmann’s picture gives room to the important yet fraught relationship between Presley and his manager Colonel Tom Parker, played by a Tom Hanks having fun being cast against type.

Touching on religion, race, sexuality, the film looks at Elvis’ influences, legacy, and questions the power that Parker had over his protégé’s life. A great ensemble cast features Olivia De JongeKodi Smit-McPheeKelvin Harrison JrYola and Richard Roxborough, plus many more.

With a soundtrack including Doja CatTame ImpalaStevie NicksJazmine SullivanMåneskin and Kacey Musgraves, Luhrmann gives a 20th century icon some fresh musical treatment, as in Moulin Rouge and The Great Gatsby.
