Memoria (12A)

Tilda Swinton and Juan Pablo Urrega sit at a mixing desk in Memoria

Set in Colombia, Tilda Swinton stars as a woman who begins to hear mysterious sounds that might connect to the supernatural, in the first English-language film from Apichatpong Weerasethakul.

When Jessica (Swinton) begins to hear sounds that no-one else seems able to hear, she is determined to explore their origin, and old memories begin to arise. Yet, are they Jessica’s memories and is everything – and everyone – all it seems to be?

An enigmatic film, its confidence in allowing Jessica’s journey to progress, while allowing room for many possibilities, creates a story that rewards being comfortable with a bit of mystery.

For select screenings, a recorded Q&A between director Apichatpong Weerasethakul, Tilda Swinton and critic Peter Bradshaw shows after the feature (see below for details).
