Mads Mikkelsen reunites with Thomas Vinterberg (The Hunt) in this Oscar-winning drama that asks if a regular tipple is the key to unlocking the best version of yourself.

Four friends, all teachers at various stages of middle age, are stuck in a rut. Unable to share their passions either at school or at home, they embark on an audacious experiment: to see if a constant level of alcohol in their blood will help them find greater freedom and happiness. Underscored by delicate and affecting camerawork, director Vinterberg’s script uses this bold premise to explore the euphoria and pain of an unbridled life.

At its heart is Martin, an unappreciated tutor, husband and father. Playing a once brilliant but now world-weary shell of a man, Mikkelsen delivers a touching and compelling performance in this thought-provoking film.

Booking is essential. Unless or until guidance changes, six people or two households of any size can visit together as a group. Before the film, you’re welcome to eat and drink in the Cinema Café area, although the cinema foyer spaces won’t be available at the moment, to allow for social distancing.

Throughout July and August, on Thursdays and Fridays, you can book a film and enjoy a beer, wine or soft drink for the combined price of £13, plus 60p booking fee per online transaction.

  • When purchasing your ticket, select 'Summer Drinks Offer' when prompted to select your ticket type
  • Present your e-ticket at the Cinema Cafe and Bar on Beech Street or Cinema 1 bar in the Centre to redeem

T&Cs

1) Bookable online only (not available at Barbican Cinema Box Office or over the phone).

2) Drink must be redeemed on the same day as the film is attended.

3) Not available for 3D films, ScreenTalks, Festivals or Event Cinema, Cinema On Demand or film screenings held outside of Cinema 1, 2 or 3. 

4) One drink (glass of house red or white wine, bottle of beer or soft drink) per ticket.
