Half Six Fix: Sibelius Symphony No 7

London Symphony Orchestra/Sir Simon Rattle

Barbara Hannigan

Two works of extraordinary emotional intensity are performed back-to-back in this one hour concert, presented and conducted by Sir Simon Rattle.

Sibelius compresses the full energy of a symphony into a single movement with his unconventional Seventh. Notable for its rich complexity and fluidity, Sir Simon Rattle has described Sibelius’ final published symphony as ‘almost like a scream.’

Hauntingly beautiful and achingly sparse, Abrahamsen’s let me tell you plunders lines from Hamlet to explore the perspective of Shakespeare’s Ophelia. It pairs stark instrumentation with the remarkable voice of Barbara Hannigan, to whom the piece is dedicated.

This concert is part of Half Six Fix, a new way to experience the LSO. Enjoy a drink from your seat, hear an introduction to the music from Sir Simon Rattle before the performance, and read programme notes on your phone or device.
