From modern master Jia Zhangke, an allegorical portrait of Chinese national malaise wrapped in the romantic tragedy of a jianghu epic.

Qiao (played by the director's longtime muse Tao Shao) is the young moll who takes the wrap for her gangster lover, Bin (Fan Liao). Emerging from prison years later, she finds a newly cosmopolitan China and a disappeared Bin and must reconcile both the loss of her boyfriend and a way of life.
