Oscar® Week 2018: The Square (15)

Members' Screening

A still from Ruben Ostlund's The Square

Ruben Östlund’s Palme d’Or-winning surreal art-world satire gets an Oscar® Week preview ahead of its Best Foreign Language Film nomination.

Christian (Claes Bang) is the respected curator of a contemporary art museum in Stockholm. Wanting his gallery to make a splash, he arrives at the idea of ‘The Square’, an installation inviting passersby into a space where they are encouraged to behave responsibly. But before this can happen Christian has his own sense of civic duty tested when his phone is stolen.

An audacious and outrageously provocative film, The Square also contains more humane notes and an eye for the subtlety of human behaviour amidst its masterly dissection of the pretensions of high art and the occasionally herd-like timidity of its followers.
