Filarmonica della Scala

Conducted by Riccardo Chailly

A picture of Riccardo Chailly conducting

The Filarmonica della Scala makes its first Barbican appearance under new music director Riccardo Chailly, with Benjamin Grosvenor as soloist.

The Filarmonica della Scala is synonymous with drama, even when it leaves the opera pit and takes to the concert platform. Tonight, Chailly and his new orchestra give those instincts full rein in Grieg, Rossini, and Tchaikovsky’s volcanic Fourth Symphony.

It’s music that could have been written for them, and the raw emotional content of Tchaikovsky’s autobiographical Fourth Symphony will be second nature to an orchestra drenched in the tradition of Verdi. And there could hardly be more dynamic partners for Benjamin Grosvenor in Grieg's Piano Concerto – a real showstopper, from a pianist whose appearances here are always warmly awaited.
