St John Passion

London Symphony Orchestra/Gianandrea Noseda

Photo of Gianandrea Noseda in black suit

Gianandrea Noseda leads a Palm Sunday performance of James MacMillan’s dramatic, large-scale telling of the St John Gospel, acclaimed as ‘a landmark for contemporary music’.

12 years after the work was premiered by the LSO under its dedicatee Sir Colin Davis, Principal Guest Conductor Gianandrea Noseda continues the Orchestra’s close relationship with the music of this pre-eminent British composer.
MacMillan drew on his own faith and experiences when writing the St John Passion. Taking part in Good Friday services and the Gregorian chanting of the Crucifixion story influenced the shape and character of his setting, along with his sense of drama and love of opera. The old and new sit side by side.

The work is written for a baritone soloist, Christ, and two choirs – a chamber choir acting as the Narrator and large chorus who depict the other major roles. However, the Passion’s final movement is purely orchestral: a reflective ‘song without words’ and fitting conclusion to this powerful and moving masterpiece.

Duration to be confirmed closer to the event.
