Magnus Holmander (clarinet)

ECHO Rising Stars

Magnus Holmander B&W playing clarinet

Magnus Holmander does things with the clarinet that seem almost unbelievable – and in this ECHO showcase concert, he won’t hold back.

The ECHO Rising Stars series gives a Europe-wide stage to outstanding young performers – but when you hear the Swedish clarinettist Magnus Holmander, you might well feel that his star has already risen. “His musicality and technical skills are amazing and his stage appearance is magical in every sense” says the composer Rolf Martinsson.

But today, Holmander takes a very different angle on the clarinet repertoire, pairing Brahms’s impassioned late sonata with a pair of 19th-century showpieces that present the clarinet as an operatic diva. Expect endless song and unashamed fireworks – and expect the unexpected, too, in a new work, specially commissioned for this tour, from the Stockholm-based composer Molly Kien.

The performance is expected to finish around 2pm.
