Evgeny Kissin plays Rachmaninov – and Beethoven’s Hammerklavier. The last of the Keyboard Lions meets the Everest of piano sonatas.

We still remember Evgeny Kissin as the shock-headed prodigy of the 1990s, but he’s come a very long way since then. This programme pairs his beloved Rachmaninov with Beethoven’s massive Hammerklavier sonata – a truly epic challenge for both body and spirit.

And if any living pianist can express the Hammerklavier’s sheer physical exhilaration, it’s Kissin. ‘Technique and feeling came together in the most miraculous way, in a recital that left one speechless with admiration’ wrote Ivan Hewett in The Daily Telegraph when Kissin played Beethoven at the Barbican in 2016. And there’s no reason, this time, to anticipate anything less.
