Ein Deutsches Requiem and The Girl from Aleppo

Westminster School and Tri-borough Music Hub

The Westminster School Symphony Orchestra and Choir, musicians from the Westminster Choral Society, Pimlico Musical Foundation and Tri-borough Music Hub standing on stage in the Barbican Hall

Two hundred talented young musicians from schools in the City of Westminster come together to perform music by Brahms and a piece by Cecilia McDowall that tells an extraordinary tale.

Cecilia McDowall's The Girl from Aleppo tells the remarkable true story of Nujeen Mustafa, a teenager with cerebral palsy who goes on a harrowing journey from war-ravaged Syria to Germany. The story comes to life through chorales, rhythmic spoken sections, body percussion, and a solo violin part infused with Middle Eastern flavours, as well as a specially-written text by poet Kevin Crossley-Holland.

This piece is paired with Johannes Brahms’s Geistliches Lied and a performance of his greatest choral work – the epic Ein Deutsches Requiem (A German Requiem) – given by Westminster School and The Westminster Choral Society.
