Women Talking (15) (AD)

Oscar Week 2023: Women Talking

Sarah Polley's unflinching drama follows a group of Mennonite women who must protect their colony following a discovery of systemic abuse.

Based on the book of the same name by Miriam Toews and featuring phenomenal performances by Rooney Mara, Claire Foy, Jessie Buckley, and Frances McDormand, Women Talking is inspired by the true events that occurred in a Mennonite colony in Bolivia, in which over 150 women were sexually abused by a group of nine men in their community for four years between 2005 and 2009.

Sarah Polley's ensemble piece follows the women of an isolated religious community grapple with reconciling their reality with their faith. Through the backstory, we see a community of women come together to figure out how they might move forward together to build a better world for themselves and their children. Stay and fight or leave. They will not do nothing.
