The Blue Hour (18) (LC) + ScreenTalk with director Anucha Boonyawatana

Queer East Film Festival

Two men in trucks at the edge of a swimming pool in The Blue Hour

Two young men meet at an abandoned swimming pool in this nightmarish study of repressed sexuality and desire.

The blue hour is the time between day and night, the realm between dream and reality, the space between good and evil. Inspired by a true story, the film is about the relationship between Tam (Atthaphan Poonsawas), a young gay loner, and Phum (Oabnithi Wiwattanawarang), a mysterious guy he meets on the internet.

Tam is constantly bullied by classmates at school and faces multiple pressures at home. One day, he arranges to meet Phum at an abandoned swimming pool, where they have sex and begin a passionate relationship. But events soon take a violent, hallucinatory turn, as Tam commences a disturbing journey of self-discovery.

Anucha Boonyawatana’s feature debut moves deftly between genres including Boy Love, family drama, and horror, gradually evolving into a nightmarish vision of repressed sexuality and desire.
