Omar Amiralay: Sorrow, Time, Silence (15*) + ScreenTalk with director Hala Alabdalla

Syrian Arts and Culture Festival

Still image of man directing a camera

Omar Amiralay, widely considered the godfather of Arab non-fiction film, was haunted by Syrian politics. Director Hala Alabdallah presents a letter of reflection and friendship in this documentary.

Amiralay sadly passed away in 2011, just before the eruption of the still-ongoing war. Part-cinematic letter to an old friend and part-reflection on Syria then and now, this film is a powerful testimony to politics, cinema, and the ideas that lead to his iconoclastic career. Sharing private moments with the veteran filmmaker, Hala Alabdalla's discussions with Omar, are a reflection on love, life and death.

Director Hala Alabdallah joins us for a ScreenTalk after the screening.
