Night of the Kings (15)

a group of men stand in a circle and a boy in the middle holds a gas lamp

A young man sent to prison is set a challenge that will determine his fate. The magical essence of story telling is captured in mystic fantasy directed by Philippe Lacôte.

Hidden in the middle of a forest in the Ivory Coast stands, ‘La Maca’, a prison run by its prisoners, most importantly, the chief. When the chief becomes ill and needs a successor, new arrival Roman (Bakary Koné) is summoned to tell a story to them all. Taking place under the blood full moon, Roman is unaware that by ending his story, he may end his life.

Philippe Lacôte (Run, 2014) uses breath-taking colours and striking imagery to tell this modern-day fable. Night of the Kings is an ode to oral tradition.
