A special screening of Spike Lee’s 1989 masterpiece to mark its 30th anniversary, featuring poetry and the creation of a new, unique mural.

Set on the hottest day of the summer, tensions in a Brooklyn neighbourhood culminate in a violent race riot in Spike Lee’s astonishing, tragically relevant drama. From its iconic opening credits to its unforgettable ending, Do the Right Thing changed how black lives were presented on screen. 

This special event opens with live poetry from Anita Barton-Williams, followed by a screening of the film and the creation and presentation of a unique mural, painted by street artist Triplezed on the evening, inspired by views on Lee’s film submitted by the audience.

Anita Barton-Williams is a poet, translator and producer. She is the mother and father of Heaux Noire: a creative platform and organisation amplifying the work of Black and Brown woman artists. She is a former Roundhouse Resident Artist, Barbican Young Poet alumna, and member of Octavia poetry collective.

 

We Are Parable is an events company that specialise in film exhibition and was founded by husband and wife team Anthony and Teanne Andrews. Since forming in 2013, they have created memorable, experiential events for Black films, working with organisations such as the British Film Institute, Disney, StudioCanal, and have worked with the likes of Idris Elba and Spike Lee.

Triplezed is a London based multi-disciplined creative who has developed custom clothing, painting and illustrations for some of London’s most loved fashion boutiques.

Barbican Cinema 1 is located within the main Barbican building on Level -2. Head to Level G and walk towards the Lakeside Terrace where you’ll find stairs and lifts to take you down to the venue floor.
