John McEnroe: In the Realm of Perfection (12A)

John McEnroe

In 1984, John McEnroe was the world’s top-ranked tennis player. That summer, he faced Ivan Lendl in the final at Roland Garros; the highlight of this documentary.

Director Julien Faraut creates an immersive and meditative documentary, focusing on the peak of McEnroe’s career. Faraut uses stunning 16mm colour archival footage to highlight the majesty of McEnroe’s style –  as well also his tempestuous and spiky character – a defining feature of his on-court performance.

This is an expertly constructed film seeking to understand McEnroe’s brilliance and obsession with reaching perfection.
