Loro (18)

Kasia Smutniak and Toni Servillo in Loro

Toni Servillo brings us another extraordinary performance as one of the most audacious and slippery politicians of our age: former Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi.

Sprawling and surreal, Paolo Sorrentino’s newest film is a scandalous journey through modern Italian society. Originally filmed in two parts for its Italian release, this international version combines both for an epic jaunt.

Along the way, we meet a scheming chancer (Riccardo Scamarcio), a smart and bored beauty queen (Kasia Smutniak) and a host of unscrupulous people in power. The parties are fabulous, the people are gorgeous, but ultimately, all roads lead to Berlusconi (Servillo): the central force of a depressing and shallow existence.

In typical fashion, Sorrentino shoots everything equally beautifully, from the endless ‘bunga bunga’ parties, to the devastating scene when Veronica Lario (Elena Sofia Ricci) – Berlusconi’s long-suffering wife – finally reaches her limit.
