Hildur Guðnadóttir: Chernobyl

A live performance featuring four musicians facing each other with smoke and stobe lights around them

Oscar-winning Icelandic composer, Hildur Guðnadóttir, presents her groundbreaking score for HBO’s Chernobyl miniseries, filmed live in an experiential performance in Warsaw this September.

This site-specific performance took place in the industrial space of Mińska 65: its limited live audience plunged into darkness, with strobe lights flashing around them to create a truly immersive and atmospheric experience.

The score is a vast soundscape, created using field recordings made at the decommissioned Ignalina nuclear power plant by sound artist Chris Watson – the location for the filming of Chernobyl. Eschewing traditional instrumentation, Guðnadóttir utilised the very same materials and environment that caused the catastrophe: the body of the power plant - the piping, pumps and turbine halls. The result is a chilling work that radiates tension, while inspiring magnificent awe.
