Staged with Complicite's characteristic elegance and startling visual originality, A Disappearing Number takes as its starting point one of the most mysterious and romantic mathematical collaborations of all time.

This is a story about connections between ideas, cultures and times. In London a man attempts to unravel the secrets of his lover. In Bangalore a woman collapses on a train. In Cambridge in 1914 Englishman GH Hardy seeks to comprehend the ideas of the Indian prodigy Srinivasa Ramanujan.
 

Simultaneously a narrative and an investigation, A Disappearing Number weaves a provocative theatrical pattern about our relentless compulsion to understand.

Simon McBurney has dedicated these performances of A Disappearing Number to Mark Weil, Artistic Director of Ilkhom Theatre, who was killed on 7 September in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

Barbicanbite is proud to have presented Ilkhom Theatre's production White White Black Stork last year in The Pit.

Louise Jeffreys, Head of Theatre at the Barbican said 'We were shocked and saddened to hear the terrible news of Mark's death. The tragedy of this loss is unimaginable. Mark's determination, passion, intelligence, humanity and humour will be long remembered. Mark's passion for Uzbek culture shone out in his bold, moving productions, and he gave so much to his country and his company. The Ilkhom Theatre is a shining light and its international reputation is a credit to Mark's vision.'
