Easter Voices

Britten Sinfonia

A landscape image of Britten Sinfonia Voices on stage

Britten Sinfonia celebrates Easter with a double-bill of choral masterpieces: Stravinsky’s stirring Mass and Mozart’s exquisite Missa Brevis.

The talents of the acclaimed Britten Sinfonia Voices, conducted by Eamonn Dougan, are showcased in a special Easter concert featuring two masses written 170 years apart. Stravinsky considered function as important as form and composed his Mass, which many consider his finest religious work, for church use, writing ‘religious music without religion is almost always vulgar.’

The Mass features gorgeous harmonic colours, animating the text of the Roman Catholic liturgy with voice, wind and brass. In the run-up to writing his own Mass, Stravinsky stumbled across a handful of Mozart’s masses in a Los Angeles bookshop; Britten Sinfonia’s Easter celebration is completed by Mozart’s beautiful Missa Brevis.
