Ian Bostridge and Elizabeth Watts head the cast in a vivid performance of Monteverdi’s Il Ritorno d’Ulisse in Patria.

The Academy of Ancient Music’s concert hall stagings of Monteverdi operas have been highlights of recent seasons at the Barbican; The Arts Desk called last season’s Poppea ‘wonderful’. Under Richard Egarr – and with a truly world-class cast – this should be a Ulisse to remember.

Il Ritorno d’Ulisse in Patria
begins with a prologue for Human Frailty – and its warmth and subtly-drawn humanity make it more than just a landmark in the evolution of opera. Ian Bostridge takes the title role as Richard Egarr and the Academy of Ancient Music continue their acclaimed Monteverdi cycle – a ‘vivid and utterly engaging spectacle’ was how Alexandra Coghlan described their 2014 Poppea.
